Legal challenge Nauru deportation

Reported at www.abc.net.au: A legal challenge has been launched in the High Court of Australia against the government’s decision to pay Nauru for the deportation of a man from the NZYQ cohort, a group of non-citizens released from indefinite detention.

The Human Rights Law Centre filed the case, seeking urgent orders to prevent the man’s removal while the case is pending.

The government claims the deportations, facilitated by new laws allowing payments to other countries, are legal, despite concerns about the implications for the treatment of migrants and refugees.
